Town Center, not a historic downtown

DeSoto's civic core is the Town Center at Hampton Road and Pleasant Run Road. City Hall, the public library, the civic center, the Corner Theatre and the recreation center share one address: 211 E. Pleasant Run Rd. A Tom Thumb grocery is across the street at 210 E. Pleasant Run. Most city festivals and the winter ice rink are staged here.

Hampton Road between Pleasant Run and Belt Line is the closest thing to a main street. In December 2025, after more than a year of hearings, the City Council rezoned a reduced stretch of it toward a walkable, mixed-use street. The project is now in design.

Two places anchor the corridor's food scene. Ojeda's, the Dallas Tex-Mex family restaurant, has a DeSoto location at 2109 N. Hampton Rd. Grow DeSoto Market Place, a city-backed small-business incubator at 324 E. Belt Line Rd., fills a former ACE Hardware building of about 26,000 sq ft. A November 2025 report counted about 35 small businesses inside, including restaurants, shops and coworking offices. National chains cluster along I-35E.

Events: shared with three neighbors

DeSoto runs some events itself and shares others with Cedar Hill, Duncanville and Lancaster, the 'Best Southwest' cities. The shared festivals rotate. The 2026 Juneteenth festival (June 14) was in Lancaster, after DeSoto hosted it at Grimes Park in 2025. The 2026 Hispanic Heritage Fest is on Sept. 19 at Valley Ridge Park in Cedar Hill.

City-run events include an Easter egg hunt at Zeiger Park, an AAPI Festival at Town Center (May 16, 2026), a Crawfish Festival at Grimes Park in early summer, a kids' fishing tournament at Briarwood Pond, and a free July 4 fireworks show at Grimes Park, held with Lancaster. In winter, DeSoto On Ice puts a skating rink at Town Center from late November into January, at $15 an hour with skates. A block party and tree lighting opens the season.

Parks, trails and Joe Pool Lake

The city's parks master plan counts about 494 acres in 22 parks, trails and recreation sites. The newest is the $53 million, roughly 74,000 sq ft Aquatic and Recreation Center at Curtistene S. McCowan Park (1400 Academy Way). It opened in April 2026 with competition and leisure pools, a suspended track and meeting rooms. The same park has a regional football complex.

Grimes Park (501 E. Wintergreen Rd.) has baseball and soccer fields and the lighted DeSoto BMX track. Moseley Park (1300 Honor Dr.) has a girls' softball complex and an outdoor family aquatic center. Briarwood Park (1625 W. Belt Line Rd.) is about 12 acres with a pond. Kiva Park (1155 Beaverbrook Ln.) is about 13 acres in a former rock quarry. The 75-acre Dryer Preserve at Windmill Hill (1410 N. Duncanville Rd.) has steep hiking trails and a bridge over Ten Mile Creek.

The Roy Orr Trail is the main spine: 3.6 miles of 8-foot concrete trail along Ten Mile Creek through the middle of town. The DeSoto Ranch Nature Trail adds a 1.2-mile granite loop at Polk Street and Woodridge Drive. For bigger water, Cedar Hill State Park on 7,500-acre Joe Pool Lake is about 16 minutes away, with campsites, two boat ramps and a swimming beach. Day entry is $7 for adults.

Errands and health care

Grocery runs stay in town. Federal SNAP retailer data lists Kroger, Tom Thumb, a Walmart Supercenter, a Walmart Neighborhood Market and Aldi in DeSoto. Farmer's Delite, a produce market, is at 440 S. Hampton Rd. Pharmacies include CVS, two Walgreens, the independent Adams Pharmacy, and pharmacy counters inside Kroger, Tom Thumb and Walmart.

DeSoto has no hospital. The nearest large one is Methodist Charlton Medical Center at 3500 W. Wheatland Rd. in southwest Dallas, a 314-bed Level III trauma center with a 40,000 sq ft emergency department expansion. Crescent Regional Hospital is in neighboring Lancaster. For minor needs, Baylor Scott & White runs an Urgent Care+ on I-35E in DeSoto. The library shares a catalog with the other Best Southwest libraries, so a DeSoto card works in all four cities.

Schools

Most of DeSoto is in DeSoto ISD. Small parts of the city are in Duncanville ISD and Dallas ISD, so check the address. DeSoto ISD had 5,565 students in 2026, down 42.9% since 2016. It runs an early childhood center, three elementaries (two of them in Glenn Heights), two magnet or specialty elementary academies, two middle schools, DeSoto High School and an early college/P-TECH high school.

In the 2024-25 state ratings, DeSoto ISD received a C. Campus grades ranged from a B at DeSoto High and Katherine Johnson Technology Magnet Academy to an F at DeSoto West Middle. Dallas County residents are zoned to Dallas College for community college.

Getting around and public safety

I-35E runs along DeSoto's east side and is the main route north. Off-peak, downtown Dallas is about 23 minutes, Love Field 33, the AT&T Stadium area in Arlington 34, Las Colinas 34, DFW Airport 45 and downtown Fort Worth 46. DeSoto is not a DART city. In June 2026 the council voted not to explore DART's GoLink service. Instead it relies on STAR Transit: STARNow same-day rides inside DeSoto run weekdays 5 a.m.-8 p.m. for $2.

DeSoto Fire Rescue is a career department with paramedic-staffed ambulances and three numbered stations. It has held an ISO Class 1 rating since April 2016. The police department, at 714 E. Belt Line Rd., had 88 authorized sworn officers and about 50 civilian staff in 2024, and logged more than 118,000 calls for service that year.

• Which Duncanville ISD and Dallas ISD campuses serve the DeSoto addresses in those districts.
• Current grade spans for each DeSoto ISD campus, and whether Ruby Young Personalized STEAM Academy (707 Young Blvd., per a title-company guide) and DeSoto East Middle still operate.
• Acreage for most individual parks. The master plan table lists acres, but they could not be matched to park names reliably.
• 2026 dates for the Crawfish Festival and the 2026-27 DeSoto On Ice season.
• Crescent Regional Hospital street number and whether it runs a 24-hour ER.
• Drive times to the nearest hospitals.
