Downtown: a Main Street town with food and live music

Royse City grew up around the railroad in 1885. Its historic core runs along Main Street and Arch Street, north of I-30. The city has been a Texas Main Street City since 2007.

Most downtown stops are places to eat. Renew Coffee (211 E. Main St.) opens early on weekdays. Main Street Emporium (101 E. Main St.) sells ice cream and coffee. Luigi's Italian Cafe is at 220 E. Main St., and Anvil Brewing No. 2, a pub with nightly events, is at 232 E. Main St. Smoke Sessions Barbecue is at 307 SH 66. The free Zaner Robison Historical Museum is at 124 Arch St. Old Jail Park sits downtown near the water tower.

Cookston Court, at 111 E. Main St., is the outdoor stage for Music on Main. These are free evening concerts run by Royse City Main Street. The 2026 series opened on April 24.

Events: Music on Main, July fireworks, FunFest, Parade of Lights

The year starts in spring with Music on Main at Cookston Court. Royse City's Independence celebration comes in late June. In 2026 it fell on June 27 and had live music, food trucks, a kids' zone and fireworks at about 10 p.m. It was held behind the middle school stadium.

FunFest, the chamber of commerce's festival, is in October. It includes a chili cookoff and live music. It used to be downtown. In 2025 it moved to a temporary site near Ouida Baley Middle School, with shuttles from downtown, and the 2026 edition was set for Oct. 17 at the same school.

December brings the Christmas Parade of Lights. In 2025 it left Ouida Baley Middle School at 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 13, ran west on SH 66 and reached downtown by 6:30. The city also runs a downtown holiday market, a hot cocoa walk and a tree lighting. Parks & Recreation hosts a youth fishing derby at City Lake Park.

Parks, ponds and trails

The city reports about 45 acres of developed parkland. That includes four playgrounds, three catch-and-release ponds, a baseball/softball complex, a soccer complex and about 1.5 miles of nature trails and jogging paths. City Lake Park (1100 Live Oak St.) is the largest park the city describes. It covers about 13 acres around a 4-acre lake, with a fishing pier, a playground, a gazebo and a half-mile trail. Walker Hawk Sports Complex (100 S. Erby Campbell Blvd.) has two baseball fields, two softball fields and a concession stand. Its trail links to a pond park off Old Greenville Road, and a free splash pad is nearby.

Lake Ray Hubbard's Rockwall shoreline is about 15 minutes west. Lavon Lake's dam area is about 25 minutes north-west, and Lake Tawakoni is roughly an hour east.

Errands and health care: mostly along I-30

Shopping clusters on the I-30 frontage. The Walmart Supercenter at 494 W. I-30 is open 6 a.m.-11 p.m. and has a pharmacy, and a CVS is close by on W. I-30. H-E-B owns about 25 acres near I-30 and FM 2642 for a 140,000 sq ft store with fuel and a car wash. As of August 2026, heavy construction was scheduled to start in early 2027, with completion set for January 2028. Fresh by Brookshire's opened in neighboring Fate in 2022. More chain restaurants are opening along I-30 in 2026-27.

Health care improved in 2026. Hunt Regional opened a 24-hour emergency department with 12 beds on June 1, 2026, in a 65,000 sq ft medical complex at 6743 I-30 E. The complex also has family medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN and orthopedics. Hunt Regional Urgent Care is at 576 W. I-30. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall (3150 Horizon Rd.) is the nearest full hospital to the west. City Hall is at 100 W. Main St. The C.F. Goodwin Public Library is listed at 309 N. Arch St.

Schools: Royse City ISD, growing fast

Royse City ISD covers Royse City and Fate and reaches into Collin and Hunt counties. Enrollment was about 10,000 in 2026. In town, its campuses are Glenda Arnold Early Childhood Center (PK), six elementaries (Anita Scott, Davis, W.R. Fort, Ruth Cherry, Paula Walker and Sara Moss), Ouida Baley Middle School and Royse City High School at 700 FM 2642. Bobby Summers Middle and the Herndon and Vernon elementaries serve the Fate side. More campuses are under construction: Magness Middle School south of the high school (due August 2027), Elementary #9 on Stone River Blvd. (due mid-2027) and Kevin Worthy Fate High School.

TEA rated the district a C (77) for 2025. Royse City High School earned a B (83). Confirm these on TEA before relying on them. Zones shift as campuses open, so check by address.

Getting around and public safety

I-30 runs along the south side of town and is the main route to Dallas. SH 66 and SH 276 also run east-west. Off-peak, downtown Rockwall is about 15 minutes away, Greenville 24, Garland 33, downtown Dallas 39, Richardson's Telecom Corridor 45 and Plano's Legacy area 52. Dallas Love Field is about 51 minutes and DFW Airport about 66. Rush hour on I-30 adds time. We found no fixed-route public transit.

Royse City has its own police department at 1530 E. Hwy 66. The fire department is a career department with stations at 300 S. Erby Campbell Blvd. and 7010 FM 35. Since January 1, 2026, AMR has provided 911 ambulance service from the fire department, with advanced life support ambulances staffed around the clock.
