Downtown: McCart Street and a new City Hall
Krum's downtown runs along McCart Street (FM 1173) near the old Santa Fe rail line. The railroad laid out the town site in 1886, and Krum was once known as a large inland grain market.
City Hall moved in October 2025 into a 1934 former Methodist church at 310 W. McCart St. The city bought the building in January 2024 and holds council meetings in the old sanctuary. The former City Hall at 146 W. McCart St. still houses the police department, planning and utility billing.
Food downtown is a short list. Texas Forever Steak & BBQ held its grand opening in late April 2026 at 115 W. Lake St., next to the 50 West event center. It serves steaks, smoked brisket, ribs and burgers, with a bar and a weekday happy hour. Cowboys Restaurant (145 W. McCart St.) serves burgers and fried chicken. Porto Finos (208 W. McCart St.) serves pizza, calzones and baked pasta. Our Blended Table (137 W. McCart St.) is a coffee and drink bar with grab-and-go breakfast, open weekday mornings and Saturdays.
The Krum Heritage Museum fills the old Farmers & Merchants State Bank building at 150 W. McCart St. It is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Local groups are raising money to restore the town's train depot.
A small-town calendar
Krum's biggest event is the Krum 4th Fest on July 4. The 2026 edition was the fifth, with gates at 4 p.m., live country music, vendors, food trucks and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. at 3036 FM 156.
In October the city runs Safe Spook, a downtown trick-or-treat with local businesses. It is set for Oct. 29, 2026, 4-6 p.m. In December 2025 the Santa Shuffle 10K, 5K and fun run started at Krum High School.
The public library hosts weekly and monthly programs: a children's hour, a Magic: The Gathering club, movie nights and a summer reading kickoff in June. In May 2026 the museum and the city held a program on the depot restoration at City Hall.
The city's online calendar shows mostly meetings, so check it and the library calendar for the current month.
Parks, trails and Lake Ray Roberts
Krum has neighborhood-scale parks, not a large recreation system. Westside Park has a playground, several baseball fields and a shaded pavilion. Saddlebrook Park has a playground and a picnic pavilion. The city's Parks and Recreation web page does not list its parks or publish their acreage. A Park Development Corporation and a Park Advisory Board meet monthly at City Hall.
We found no city trail system. For longer outings, Ray Roberts Lake State Park is about 31 minutes east. The lake covers 29,000 acres. The park's Isle du Bois and Johnson Branch units have camping, trails and swim areas, and its Greenbelt Corridor carries a 20-mile trail along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River to Lewisville Lake. Day entry is $7 for adults; children 12 and under are free. TPWD suggests reserving day passes, because the park often fills.
Errands mostly mean Denton or Sanger
We did not confirm a full-size supermarket in Krum. The nearest supercenter we confirmed is the Walmart at Rayzor Ranch Marketplace, 2750 W. University Dr. in Denton, about 11 minutes away. Walmart plans to remodel that store in 2026. Tom Thumb opened a new store in Sanger in December 2025 at 1413 W. Chapman Rd., about 18 minutes north. A seasonal produce stand, 156 Produce Market, sells along FM 156.
A 7-Eleven was under construction at US 380 and Trent Road, with completion listed for October 2026.
There is no hospital in Krum. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton (3000 Interstate 35) is about 13 minutes away, and Medical City Denton (3535 S. I-35E), a 208-bed hospital with an emergency department, is about 16 minutes away. The urgent care clinics listed for the area are in Denton, Argyle and Northlake.
The Krum Public Library is at 815 E. McCart St. It is open Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Schools
Krum ISD covers about 101 square miles of northwest Denton County and enrolls about 2,500 students. It has three PK-5 elementary schools (Dodd, Dyer and Hansel), Krum Middle School and Krum High School.
A new Krum Middle School at 125 FM 2450 opened for 2026-27, and it is designed so it could later serve as a high school. In April 2026 the district dropped plans for a new high school under its 2022 bond. It will instead renovate about 70% of the current high school on Bobcat Boulevard and add about 143,000 square feet. The Texas Tribune lists the district's 2024-25 state rating as a C. We did not confirm 2026 ratings.
Getting around and public safety
Krum is a driving town. Downtown Denton and the University of North Texas are each about 15 minutes away. Fort Worth's downtown is about 47 minutes away, downtown Dallas about 58 and DFW Airport about 48, off-peak. These are Realust estimates from the OSRM routing engine and assume no traffic. A new road segment from FM 1173 (McCart Street) to Hopkins Road has broken ground.
The Krum Police Department works out of the former City Hall at 146 W. McCart St. Its office is open weekdays, and Denton County dispatch takes after-hours calls. The Krum Fire Department is at 400 N. First St. and runs ambulance service. The May 2025 bond set aside $11 million for public safety, and the city expects police and fire to move into a new building.

Three taxing units, one high city rate
A home inside Krum pays three taxing units: Krum ISD at 1.1952, the City of Krum at 0.6614 and Denton County at 0.1859, all per $100 of value. That adds up to 2.04% before exemptions, the second-highest base rate among nearby Denton County towns after Ponder. There is no college or hospital district on the bill.
The school district takes $140,000 off a homestead's value, and the county takes 1% with a $5,000 minimum. The city has no general homestead exemption, so its rate applies to full value. Owners 65 and older get $20,000 off from the city, $55,000 from the county and $60,000 more from the school district, plus a school tax ceiling.
At Krum's ACS median home value of $336,500, a homestead owes about $5,190 a year, or $433 a month. That is an effective rate near 1.54%. The same house as a rental with no exemptions would owe about $6,870.
What changes for 2026
Krum ISD proposed a 2026 rate of 1.2006, with the debt portion rising to 0.48. The district's notice says it has about $214.7 million in outstanding bonds. On the median home, the proposal adds about $11 a year.
Krum voters were asked in May 2025 to approve $11 million in bonds for a fire and police building and $9 million for streets, repaid with property taxes. Watch the city's 2026 rate for that debt.
MUDs sit just outside the city
No MUD or PID inside Krum city limits shows up on the 2025 county rate lists. The newer subdivisions along US 380 with Krum addresses are a different story. Legends Ranch MUD, about 542 acres north of US 380 in Denton's ETJ, levies 1.20 per $100. D.R. Horton's Hickory Grove, in that area and in Krum ISD, lists a MUD tax.
Those homes skip the city's 0.66 rate but pay the MUD. At the median value, that works out to about $7,000 a year instead of $5,190. Look up the exact address on the Denton County tax site and ask for the seller's MUD notice.
Electric: shop a plan
Krum sits in Oncor's delivery area, so most homes buy power from a retail provider. Oncor's own charge is $4.06 a month plus 6.87¢ per kWh. The median 12-month flat plan in Krum costs 15.4¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh, about $154 a month. Plans that look cheaper often rely on bill credits that disappear below 1,000 kWh.
Internet, water and trash
Krum has several wired options. Optimum covers about three-quarters of the area starting at $35, Brightspeed sells fiber in parts of town and DSL almost everywhere, and Pavlov Media and Spectrum cover some streets. Fixed-wireless and 5G home internet fill gaps.
The city bills water and sewer. Its current rates and trash fee were not available for this report, so ask for a recent bill on any home you are considering.
Commute, HOA and rent
The average Krum worker's commute is 32 minutes. Without traffic, downtown Denton is about 15 minutes away, DFW Airport and downtown Fort Worth about 48, and downtown Dallas about an hour.
HOA dues in the new 76249 communities run about $50 to $58 a month. Hickory Grove charges $700 a year and The Meadows $50 a month.
Median gross rent in Krum is $1,974 a month, and about three in four homes are owner-occupied.

A grain town on the railroad
Krum began in 1886, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid out a 200-acre townsite seven miles northwest of Denton and named it for railroad official Charles K. Krum. By 1900 it was shipping at least half a million bushels of wheat a year and billing itself as the largest inland grain market in the world.
The mill burned in 1915 and the elevators later closed. The population peaked near 750 around 1925, dropped below 300 in the Depression and stayed at 300 to 400 into the 1970s. The 1927 grain elevator still stands.
Population: steady climb, recent flattening
Commuters arriving by I-35 pushed the Census count from 917 in 1980 to 1,542 in 1990, 1,979 in 2000 and 4,157 in 2010. The 2020 Census counted 5,483.
Census Bureau estimates put Krum at 6,808 on July 1, 2025. The largest one-year gain was 2023 (about 500 people); the 2025 estimate is only 10 more than 2024. NCTCOG's Jan. 1, 2026 estimate is 6,684, unchanged from a year earlier. No city or regional numeric forecast was found; a 2019 parks plan expected the population to nearly double by 2037.
Housing: permits inside the city have slowed
Census permit data show two bursts of building inside city limits: 99 homes in 2013 and 84 to 192 a year in 2019-2022. Listed homes in Hopkins Meadows and Erickson Farms date from 2022. Permits then fell to 86 in 2023, 23 in 2024 and 1 in 2025, with none reported through September 2026.
The two largest communities now selling with Krum addresses sit on the Denton side of ZIP 76249. Hickory Grove, a D.R. Horton community planned for 1,516 homes on Legends Way, is listed in Denton's extraterritorial jurisdiction. The Meadows on Autumn Hill Drive, built by Tri Pointe and First Texas, is marketed as Denton with a Krum mailing address. Both are in Krum ISD. Listings show a municipal utility district or special tax for these communities, so the tax bill can differ from one for a home inside Krum city limits.
Schools: the fastest growth is in the district
Krum ISD covers more than 100 square miles. Enrollment held near 2,050 to 2,120 from 2014-15 to 2020-21, then rose to 2,483 in 2023-24. State data show 2,578 in 2026. The superintendent said in August 2026 that nearly 26,000 homes are planned or platted inside the district, up from about 11,800 counted in 2021.
Voters passed $244.7 million in May 2022 and turned down a $30.3 million stadium. The district opened a new middle school on FM 2450 for 2026-27 and is expanding Krum High School rather than building a new one. Its demographer's 2021-era forecast of over 3,000 students by 2025 has not arrived; a further forecast of 5,400 to 6,778 by 2029-30 would require enrollment to double in four years.
Roads and city projects
TxDOT is rebuilding I-35 north of Denton to six lanes in several pieces through 2029. FM 1173, Krum's main link to I-35, is in design for a 6-lane divided road from FM 156 to the interstate, an $80 million project with no letting date. A Loop 288 extension west of Denton is also in design.
In May 2025, Krum voters approved $11 million for a fire and police facility and $9 million for streets, and renewed the quarter-cent street maintenance sales tax.
Prices and incomes
The Census Bureau's survey puts Krum's median owner-occupied home value at $336,500 for 2020-2024, up from $188,700 in 2015-2019. Median household income rose from $74,004 to $124,405 over the same periods. About three in four occupied homes are owner-occupied (1,527 of 2,014). New homes nearby list from about $250,000 to over $600,000.
