Downtown runs along Bailey Street

Ponder's center is a short stretch of Bailey Street just west of FM 156. Town Hall is at 102 W. Bailey St., and the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department is at 102 E. Bailey St. Ponder ISD's campuses are also on W. Bailey.

The best-known business is the steakhouse at 110 W. Bailey St. The town council approved a use permit, site plan and replat for Ranchman's by Marty B's in June 2025, and the restaurant reopened in early July 2026 under that name. A Subway is at 104 W. Bailey St., and Martha's Taco Shop is at 112 W. James St., with reviews posted in 2026.

Plans are early. At an October 2025 park board meeting, a resident presented a concept for land owned by the town's economic development corporation that could include a ballfield, a park, a church and restaurants or shops. Nothing has been approved.

A short, small-town calendar

Ponder's town events are few and run by volunteers. The park board planned Christmas in the Park for Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, starting at 2:30 p.m., with a church-run Polar Express event, photos with Santa from 5:30 p.m., and hot dogs, cookies and hot chocolate from the town. The 2026 date had not been posted where we could read it.

Ponder Frontier Days is described as the town's annual celebration, held at Eddie Deussen Jr. Park, but we found no 2025 or 2026 date, so it is not in our calendar. Denton County Cowboy Church, at 400 Robinson Road, holds events in its covered arena, including a three-night revival on May 13-15, 2026.

Parks are small and town-run

The park board's October 2025 agenda covered three sites: Eddie Deussen Park, Remington Park and the Triplex ballfields. Eddie Deussen Jr. Park is the central park, with a playground, a half basketball court and a pavilion. Remington Park, in the Remington Park Estates subdivision, has walkways, a playground, soccer space and a basketball court. The Triplex hosts youth baseball, about a mile from the main park. The town does not publish acreage for any of them.

In June 2025 a resident told the council the parks needed repairs. In October 2025 the park board noted a broken basketball goal and broken sprinklers at Remington Park and vandalism at restrooms, and discussed cameras. The board said the parks budget was $125,000 and that town staff would take over mowing.

We found no town trail system. Homes.com places Grapevine and Lewisville lakes within about 20 miles and Ray Roberts Lake State Park about 25 miles away; we did not route exact drive times to them.

Errands mostly mean Denton

We found no full-size grocery store in Ponder. In town there is a Dollar General at 150 E. FM 2449. Most weekly shopping heads east to Denton. The Walmart Supercenter at 2750 W. University Dr. is about 9 miles and 14 minutes away off-peak. It was remodeled from April to August 2026, including a new pharmacy and a larger pickup area.

There is no hospital or emergency room in Ponder. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton (3000 N. I-35) is about 15 minutes away, and Medical City Denton (3535 S. I-35E) is about 22 minutes. Both had renovation projects filed with the state in 2026.

The Betty Foster Public Library is at 405 Shaffner St. Its librarian told the council in mid-2025 that visits were rising, the library had issued 10 cards in one day, and a Friends of the Library group was forming.

Schools: one district, three campuses, growth ahead

Ponder ISD serves pre-K through 12th grade on three campuses along W. Bailey Street: Ponder Elementary (EE-5, 401 W. Bailey), Ponder Junior High (6-8, 300 W. Bailey) and Ponder High School (9-12). The district office is at 400 W. Bailey. With one campus per grade band, there are no feeder choices inside the district. Confirm the district for any specific address.

Ratings have moved. For 2024-25 the TEA rated the district C, the elementary D, the junior high C and the high school A. For 2025-26 the district reports a B (84) for the district, B (82) for both the elementary and junior high, and A (95) for the high school.

In May 2026 voters approved Propositions A and C of a three-part bond. Proposition A, about $290.6 million, pays for two new elementary schools, a high school expansion, a multipurpose center, an Ag Center expansion, a transportation center, an administration building, a child care center and land for future schools. Proposition B, a stadium expansion, did not pass.

Getting around and public safety

FM 156 runs north-south through town, and FM 2449 runs east toward Denton. Off-peak, the Denton square is about 19 minutes away, Fort Worth City Hall about 43 minutes, DFW Airport about 47 minutes, Love Field about an hour and Dallas City Hall just over an hour. These are free-flow estimates, so expect longer drives at rush hour. We found no public transit serving Ponder.

Fire service comes from the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., at 102 E. Bailey St. In July 2024 it answered 68 calls, 15 of them inside town limits, and its chief asked the council to form a committee to study a municipal fire department. The town also has a police department that reports monthly to the council. We could not confirm its staffing, its station address or the area's ambulance provider.
