Oak Street: the restaurant row
Roanoke calls itself the Unique Dining Capital of Texas, and the city counts more than 60 places to eat, most of them on US 377 or along Oak Street downtown. An $8 million Oak Street project added roundabouts, landscaping, lighting and new paving, and 17 food or drink businesses have opened on Oak Street since 2019.
Two places anchor the street. Babe's Chicken Dinner House (104 N. Oak St.) opened in April 1993, and The Classic Cafe (504 N. Oak St.) opened in May 1993; both were still serving in 2026. Roanoke Tavern, a sports bar, opened in 2025 at 309 S. Oak St., sharing the building with the Roanoke Live music venue. The Visitor Center & Museum (114 N. Oak St.) sits in the restored Rock Building, which started as the 1886 Silver Spur Saloon.
More is on the way. Pirate Panda Brewing, a two-story brewpub at 200 S. Oak St., broke ground in June 2026 and is aiming for early 2027. A combined coffee shop and speakeasy is planned at 115 N. Oak St. A 430-space parking garage between Bowie and Main streets is due in fall 2027, and a hotel with a full-service restaurant is slated for June 2028. Expect construction downtown through that stretch.
A full events calendar on Oak Street
The city runs events nearly every month, and most happen on Oak Street near City Hall at 500 S. Oak St. The biggest is Celebrate Roanoke, held the second Saturday in October. The 2026 edition, the 29th, was on Oct. 10, with free admission, more than 75 vendors, a rodeo area and a concert headlined by LANCO.
Other fixtures: Eggapalooza the Saturday before Easter (March 28 in 2026, at the soccer complex), the Evenings on Oak Street concerts every other Thursday from April through June, Taste and Tunes on the first Saturday in May, July 3 fireworks, Trick-or-Treat on Oak Street on Oct. 31, a Veterans Tribute in November, and the Hometown Holiday with the tree lighting and parade. The 2026 Hometown Holiday is Saturday, Dec. 5.
Parks, a recreation center and a big new sports complex
The city lists nine parks. Roanoke Community Park (201 Park Dr.) has ballfields and a fishing pier on a pond with a half-mile trail. FairPlay Park (312 S. Walnut St.) has the city pool with slides, plus softball, Little League and soccer fields. Cannon Parkway Park (750 Cannon Pkwy.) has a splash pad, tennis, sand volleyball and the city skate park. Parks of Roanoke (107 Hillsborough Dr.) has a second splash pad. Splash pads run May 1 to Sept. 30. The city does not publish park acreage.
Walking trails inside parks are short, from about 0.2 to 0.5 miles each. The Recreation Center at 501 Roanoke Road is 38,000 square feet, with a weight room, two basketball courts, racquetball and an indoor track. Hawaiian Falls water park is at 290 W. Byron Nelson Blvd.
The privately developed Roanoke Sports Complex, at SH 114 and Cleveland Gibbs Road, covers 122 acres with eight baseball fields. Five were set to open for tournaments in fall 2026, the rest by February 2027, with retail and trails by summer 2027. Grapevine Lake's north shore is about 25 minutes away by car.
Errands are close
A Walmart Supercenter (1228 N. US 377) is in town and has a pharmacy. CVS (1305 N. US 377) has a MinuteClinic. The nearest Tom Thumb is in Trophy Club at 101 Trophy Lake Dr., and H-E-B's Alliance store is at 3451 Heritage Trace Pkwy. in Fort Worth, about 15 minutes away. CareNow runs an urgent care at 1530 US 377.
The closest hospital is Baylor Medical Center at Trophy Club (2850 E. SH 114). Medical City Alliance and Texas Health Alliance are both in north Fort Worth. The library is at 308 S. Walnut St. and opens six days a week.
Schools
Roanoke is in Northwest ISD, which earned a B (82) from the state in August 2026. Three elementary schools are in Roanoke: Roanoke Elementary, Cox Elementary and Hughes Elementary. They feed Medlin Middle (Trophy Club) or Tidwell Middle (Roanoke), then Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club. Steele Accelerated High School, also in Roanoke, offers a shorter path to graduation. Campus assignment depends on address, so check the district's boundary tool.
Getting around and public safety
SH 114 and US 377 cross in Roanoke, with I-35W a few miles west. Off-peak, Southlake Town Square is about 11 minutes away, Alliance Town Center 15, DFW Airport 24, downtown Fort Worth and Las Colinas 25, downtown Denton 26, and downtown Dallas and Love Field about 39. Rush hour will add time. We found no fixed-route transit.
Roanoke has its own police department (609 Dallas Dr.) and a combination fire department with two stations and 23 firefighters, which also runs EMS. In June 2025 the city's fire protection rating moved up to ISO Class 1, the best grade.

Property tax is lower than in many nearby towns
On the Denton County side of Roanoke, a home pays three taxing units: Northwest ISD at 1.0841, the city at 0.3262 and Denton County at 0.1859, all per $100 of value. That adds up to about 1.60% before exemptions. Trophy Club, Argyle and Justin all run higher, while Northlake, Haslet and Westlake run slightly lower.
The school district rate includes a 3-cent increase voters approved in November 2025. The city raised its rate by about 1.8 cents for the 2025 tax year.
Exemptions cut the bill. Northwest ISD takes $140,000 off a homestead's value, and the city takes 20%, with a $10,000 minimum. The city also exempts $40,000 for owners 65 and older. At the ACS median home value of $466,900, the 2025 bill comes to about $5,630 a year, or $469 a month. The same house as a rental with no exemptions would owe about $7,450.
The Tarrant County part costs more
Part of Roanoke lies in Tarrant County. Homes there pay Tarrant County, the JPS hospital district and Tarrant County College, which total 0.4635, instead of Denton County's 0.1859. The base rate there is about 1.87%. Check which county an address is in before comparing tax bills.
No MUD or PID was found
This research did not find a municipal utility district or public improvement district inside Roanoke. The city budget does not mention one, and the area rate sheets list none for the city. Districts can still apply to specific tracts, so look up the exact address on the appraisal district site and read the seller's disclosure.
Water and sewer are the biggest monthly bill
The city sets water and sewer rates, and they have risen fast. The city's own budget showed a 5,000-gallon bill of $74.84 before a January 2024 increase and projected about $142 for FY2026.
Under the 2026 rates, a 1-inch residential meter pays a $39 water base and a $47 sewer base. The first 2,000 gallons of water carry no volume charge, and sewer costs $11.91 per 1,000 gallons, capped at 10,000 gallons for homes. At 5,000 gallons that comes to about $155 a month, or about $127 on a 3/4-inch meter. New residential accounts pay a $90 deposit.
Trash and recycling cost $16.46 a month on the city bill, with pickup every Tuesday and bulk pickup twice a month.
Electric, gas and internet
Roanoke is on Oncor's lines, so residents choose a retail electric plan. Oncor's delivery charges alone come to about $73 at 1,000 kWh, and the plan's energy charge is added on top. Atmos Energy provides natural gas.
FCC data show AT&T fiber available across the city and FiberFirst fiber at about 91% of locations. Spectrum cable reaches about 90%. Several 5G home services and Starlink are also listed.
HOA, rent and commute
Fairway Ranch listings show HOA dues of about $1,210 a year. Dues in other subdivisions were not confirmed.
Apartments averaged $1,669 a month in October 2026, from $1,451 for a one-bedroom to $2,205 for a three-bedroom, based on buildings with 50 or more units. About 46% of households rent.
The average Roanoke commute is about 27 minutes. I-35W has tolled TEXpress lanes north to Eagle Parkway, and pay-by-mail drivers pay double the tag rate.

Roanoke traces to 1847, when families from Missouri settled near Denton and Henrietta creeks. When the Texas and Pacific Railroad came through in 1881, residents moved to the line and the town of Roanoke began.

From railroad stop to suburb
Roanoke traces to 1847, when families from Missouri settled near Denton and Henrietta creeks. When the Texas and Pacific Railroad came through in 1881, residents moved to the line and the town of Roanoke began. It had 350 people in 1890 and incorporated in 1933.
For decades it stayed small: 585 people in the 1960s and 910 in 1980. The 1990 Census counted 1,616. In 2007 the neighboring town of Marshall Creek consolidated with Roanoke.
Population counts and estimates
The Census counted 2,810 people in 2000, 5,962 in 2010 and 9,665 in 2020. Census Bureau estimates put the city at 9,944 in 2021, 10,005 in 2022, 10,888 in 2023, 10,932 in 2024 and 10,931 in July 2025.
NCTCOG, the regional planning agency, estimated 10,161 residents on January 1, 2025 and 10,164 a year later. No population projection from the city or NCTCOG was found.
Housing permits and projects
Census permit data show the city issued 100 to 180 single-family permits a year from 2013 to 2019. Since 2021 it has issued 12 to 25 a year. Apartment permits include 311 units in 2017 and 350 in 2022. In 2025 the city permitted 22 units, and 8 through September 2026.
Fairway Ranch, on the south side off SH 114, and Briarwyck, built mostly in the 2010s, were each platted in several phases. Fairway Ranch builders have included David Weekley Homes and Drees Custom Homes.
In 2025 the council approved Watermere on Oak Street, a 252-unit rental community for ages 55 and up planned to open in 2027, plus 30 lots at Walnut and Lois streets and 8 homes at Walnut Street and Dorman Road. Council members turned away a 154-townhome plan at Marshall Creek Road and US 377 in 2025 and tabled a 44-unit building on North Oak Street in January 2026.
Many listings say 'Roanoke, TX 76262' but sit in Northlake, Justin, Fort Worth or Trophy Club. Check the city limits and the tax bill before you buy.
What is being built downtown
Roanoke has rebuilt Oak Street since 2004, with a new City Hall, a parking garage and an extended street. Roanoke City Center is planned for about 115,000 square feet of retail and 80,000 square feet of office.
The largest project now is a city-owned convention center with a privately run hotel of about 200 rooms at 600 S. Oak St. The state construction filing lists $99.7 million, starting July 2026 and finishing May 2028. A new police and court building is also under way.
Roads, water and jobs
Roanoke sits where US 377 meets SH 114. TxDOT widened US 377 north from Henrietta Creek Road starting in 2022 and has proposed a four-lane divided road from SH 114 to FM 1171 in Flower Mound.
The Trinity River Authority's 11.5 million-gallon-a-day Denton Creek wastewater plant is on US 377 in Roanoke and serves Roanoke and nine other cities. TRA is building new interceptor lines through the city.
The city's 2022 financial report lists distribution and retail employers as its largest: General Motors (460), W.W. Grainger and Martin Brower (450 each) and Walmart (400).
Schools
Northwest ISD serves Roanoke. District enrollment rose from 19,831 in 2014-15 to 32,098 in 2024-25, and the district reported 32,839 students in 2025-26.
Voters rejected a $986 million bond in November 2020, approved three of four propositions in a $745.7 million bond in May 2021, and passed a $1.995 billion bond in May 2023. The district's demographer, Zonda, projected 35,591 students by 2030-31 and 37,273 by 2035-36 in its September 2026 report. Its December 2024 report had projected more than 38,700 by 2029-30.

Census survey data put the median owner-estimated home value at $466,900 for 2020-2024, up from $157,300 in 2011-2015. Median household income was $97,295 in 2020-2024. Margins of error for a city this size are wide.
